Why Did God Call Sinners? | The Gospel Leviticus Tells
Why Did God Call Sinners? The Gospel Leviticus Tells Leviticus is often seen as a difficult book filled with sacrifices, blood, priests, purity laws, and regulations that seem far removed from our lives today. But beneath every altar, every offering, every priestly garment, and every command to be holy, one great question is being answered: How can a holy God dwell among sinful people? The book of Leviticus reveals both the seriousness of sin and the depth of God’s grace. A sinner brings an offering. Hands are placed upon the sacrifice. Blood is shed. The priest stands between the people and the holy presence of God. On the Day of Atonement, one goat dies, while another carries the confessed sins of the people far away into the wilderness. Again and again, Leviticus teaches the same truth: Sin cannot simply be ignored. A price must be paid. A substitute must take the sinner’s place. Guilt must be removed. And only God can provide the way for sinners to draw near. Yet the sacrifices had to be offered again and again. The priests themselves were sinners. The Day of Atonement returned every year. All of this pointed beyond itself. Jesus Christ is the true and perfect sacrifice. He is the faithful High Priest. He bore our sins. He suffered outside the gate. And through His once-for-all sacrifice, He opened the way for sinners to come near to God. Leviticus is not merely a book of ancient laws. It is the story of a holy God who makes a way to live among an unholy people. It is the story of substitution, atonement, cleansing, restoration, and holiness. And ultimately, it is a book that points us to Jesus Christ. This long-form Bible meditation explores the message of Leviticus as one unfolding story of the gospel. May this journey help you see the holiness of God more clearly, understand the seriousness of sin more deeply, and trust more fully in the grace revealed in Jesus Christ. “Be holy, because I, the LORD your God, am holy.” — Leviticus 19:2 Subscribe and continue the journey through Scripture with us.
