The Tonto and Mescalero Apaches have been causing unrest in recent months, partly to protest the settlers' encroachment on Apache territory. The two drifters are ambushed by the Apaches and have to fight their way out. Shortly afterward, they encounter a cavalry patrol and inform Captain Gannon about a possible Apache uprising. Captain Gannon is skeptical but agrees to take the two drifters into his convoy on their way to Apache Wells, where he expects Jim and Bill to give a full account of their encounter with the Apaches. Review: Begins like STAGECOACH A motley crew of passengers boards the stagecoach to Lordsburg and Apache Wells; two of them—Rory Calhoun and Arthur Hunnicutt—tell Richard Arlen that the Apaches burned a wagon train. I was fully prepared for an A.C. Lyles-produced remake of STAGECOACH. Instead, the film changed halfway through and became something entirely different. It's still a geezer western with actors from a bygone era, happy to receive their paychecks: Red Barry, Jean Parker, and Johnny Mack Brown in small roles, Lon Chaney Jr. as a stagecoach driver, DeForest Kelly as a psychopathic gunslinger... But in the end, the film shifted gears often enough in surprising but meaningful ways to keep me interested, becoming a tough, hard-hitting western.
