Cancer is caused by cellular copying errors, and the longer you live, the more frequently these errors occur. In other words, this rapidly increasing graph is due to the increasing aging population. Are people really living longer? If we want to see whether lung cancer mortality rates have truly declined, we need to create a graph that removes the effect of age. This is called an age-adjusted mortality rate.
