First place in our KfW Award for Building in the Existing Buildings category goes to a true passion project with a touching story. After standing empty for many years and on the verge of collapse, the old 13th-century barn finally found its saviors, who lovingly transformed it into a modern home. This required courage and a clear vision. The current owners had both and developed a concept that preserved as much of the original barn as possible. This is particularly evident in the old roof truss, which remains true to its original state and has only been supplemented by a few partition walls. Thus, the property in Arnstadt, Thuringia, continues to exude its historic charm – enhanced by modern and stylish interior design.
