Verrückter Umbau: Modernes Haus in die Mauern einer alten Scheune gebaut | ARD Room Tour
Old walls on the outside, a modern house on the inside. Vera and Oliver have managed a crazy conversion. They have built their dream home inside the walls of an old barn. In doing so, they have constructed an independent and modern, cube-like house made of wood in the listed natural stone walls of the old barn and designed it with unusual colors. From the outside, however, the building looks almost a little dilapidated. The 250-year-old barn is located in Grüningen, a district of Donaueschingen in the Black Forest. Originally, the massive barn made of natural stone boulders served as a straw store. Oliver remembers the barn from the past. His father used it as a warehouse from time to time. Even later, when Oliver and Vera had long since moved to Cologne, they regularly walked past the old barn when visiting Oliver's old home. And the desire arose to convert the barn into their modern dream home. Vera and Oliver were able to buy the listed barn in February 2021. An architect friend of theirs helped them plan the conversion and renovation. This gave rise to the idea of building a house within a house: They erected a cube-like 120 m² building made of wood within the walls of the old barn, with one to two meters distance to the listed outer walls. Within the old walls, you can therefore walk almost completely around the new house inside. In this way, the exterior of the old barn remained almost completely in its original state and was only altered on one side by an inconspicuous cube made of Corten steel and an exhaust pipe - even the listed building authorities had no objections and made the modern house in old walls possible. The effect is astonishing: from the outside, the natural stone barn with its old walls looks very rugged and almost a little dilapidated. As soon as you enter the barn, you find yourself in a modern, brightly colored house. It took one and a half years to convert and renovate the old barn according to the house in the house principle, and Vera and Oliver needed another year to design the interior, which they wanted to keep modern. Oliver and Vera worked on the conversion of their barn themselves. For over a year, the two of them spent every spare minute working on their dream home. They had to commute from Cologne to the Black Forest time and again. From removing old floors and ceilings to working on the load-bearing wooden beams and decorating the interior with unusual colors - the teacher and the journalist became passionate DIY enthusiasts in no time at all. The modern house within the walls of the old barn was built using timber frame construction and meets current energy standards. Insulated OSB and DBD boards provide excellent insulation. A wood pellet stove in the cellar provides warmth. The windows, which can be opened outwards, are a special feature. This saves space and the windows are also well protected in the rain because they are located inside the old walls. When designing the interior of their dream home, Vera and Oliver attached great importance to a special color scheme, ultimately opting for shades of blue, pink and black. To keep their color scheme consistent, they even painted the radiators themselves, as black models were not available on the market. The conversion of the old barn in Grüningen into a modern house shows how a historic building can be transformed into a unique living space with creative ideas and great personal commitment. This house within a house is an amazing highlight for lovers of listed buildings, architecture and innovative living.
