A brief analysis of the reign of Nicholas I (1825–1855)—one of the most conservative and controversial periods in the history of the Russian Empire. Beginning with the suppression of the Decembrist Uprising, Nicholas I's thirty-year reign was marked by the strict centralization of the state apparatus, increased censorship, and the establishment of the official triad of "Orthodoxy, Autocracy, and Nationality." At the same time, it was during this period that legislation was codified under Mikhail Speransky, the first steps of the Industrial Revolution began, the Tsarskoye Selo Railway was built, and the crisis of the serfdom system, which became evident by the start of the Crimean War, intensified. The video examines key reforms, the specifics of Nicholas I's domestic policy, and the foreign policy course that cemented the empire's status as the "gendarme of Europe." Tereshchuk Andrei Vasilievich is a Russian historian who dedicated his life to chronicling the lives and works of the great figures of Imperial Russia. A hallmark of his works is their unvarnished depiction of outstanding personalities, complete with all the flaws and vices inherent in human nature.
