Emperor Paul I is one of the most enigmatic and tragic figures in Russian history. After becoming Tsar following the thirty-four-year reign of his mother, Catherine II, he attempted to completely change the country's course: he abolished the rights of the nobility, strengthened discipline in the army, and introduced a clear law of succession. However, Paul's harsh reforms, irascible temper, and unpredictability alienated high society. His short but turbulent reign was cut short in March 1801 by a bloody conspiracy at Mikhailovsky Castle. Tereshchuk Andrei Vasilyevich is a Russian historian who dedicated his life to describing the lives and works of the great men of Imperial Russia. A hallmark of his works is their unvarnished depiction of outstanding personalities, complete with all the flaws and vices inherent in human nature. Despite the "debunking" of myths, the books also present the most important deeds, reforms, and other events carried out by the volume's protagonists.
