Learn how Shifted develops a simple modular synth sequence into a more characterful, gritty, and evolving sound. He starts with a very minimal setup: kick drum, bassline-style synth part, and a white noise hi-hat. From there, he shows how to shape a basic oscillator sequence into something more expressive by experimenting with tuning, FM modulation, envelopes, filter movement, distortion, and EQ. Rather than relying on a complicated sequence, Shifted demonstrates how small changes in timbre, rhythm, filter modulation, and harmonic content can keep the ear interested and make the pattern feel less predictable. We also look at how adding extra envelopes, decoupled from the main sequence, can create unexpected rhythmic movement by opening the filter in different ways. The patch is then processed through external hardware, including EQ, compression, saturation, and distortion, to add grit, weight, and character.
