Prof. Dr. Mathis Wackernagel delivers his keynote at the Day of Insects 2026 in Leuven, Belgium, the first international edition of the annual conference founded by Dr. Hans-Dietrich Reckhaus and INSECT-RESPECT. In this talk, Wackernagel uses the ecological footprint concept he co-invented to show why humanity is living beyond planetary limits and makes a surprising case for why acting now is not a sacrifice but a strategic advantage. The Day of Insects brings together scientists, businesses, policymakers, artists and citizens from across Europe and beyond to take a stand for insects and biodiversity.
