Johann Mattheson - Double Fugue and Fughetta in C Minor, Harpsichord & Sheet Music

Double Fugue: 0:00 Fughetta: 6:31 These fugues, written in the key of C minor, but with the key signature of C dorian - which was not uncommon in the baroque period - show a mastery of the form and exquisite style! At 2:32 we have the first appearance of the second subject of the double fugue, and later, true to form, the first subject returns to fit with the second subject in various ways. The fughetta is also superb, with a beautiful subject and full of stretti. A critic and theorist, and a close friend of Handel, Johann Mattheson (1681-1764) didn't compose a lot of music, but he was hugely influential with his theoretical writings on late baroque and early classical music. Bringing the beauty of historical recordings to life takes time and dedication!
