🇬🇧 History of Edinburgh Welcome to Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland and one of Europe’s most historic and beautiful cities. The story of Edinburgh began long before the city itself existed. The volcanic rock on which Edinburgh Castle stands today was formed around 340 million years ago during ancient volcanic activity, and people settled in this area thousands of years later. Around the seventh century, a hilltop fortress known as Din Eidyn stood on Castle Rock. It was the stronghold of the ancient British kingdom of Gododdin, and the city’s modern name is believed to have developed from this early settlement. Later in the seventh century, the Angles of Northumbria captured the fortress, and Edinburgh gradually developed into an important military and trading centre. In the twelfth century, King David I of Scotland transformed Edinburgh into one of Scotland’s principal royal burghs. Trade flourished, markets expanded, and the city became increasingly important. During the Middle Ages, the Old Town grew around Edinburgh Castle. Tall houses, narrow closes and winding streets created the unique character that visitors still experience today. In 1603, James VI and I inherited the English throne, uniting the crowns of Scotland and England. Although the royal court moved to London, Edinburgh remained Scotland’s political, legal and cultural heart. The eighteenth century saw the construction of the elegant New Town, now regarded as one of the finest examples of Georgian urban planning in Europe.
