Welcome to Chichester, one of the most beautiful and historic cities in southern England. The city’s history stretches back nearly two thousand years. It began as the Roman settlement of Noviomagus and is now famous for its peaceful streets, historic buildings and magnificent cathedral. During our visit we stayed at George Bell House, located within the historic Cathedral Close. The house was built in 1871 as the residence of the Archdeacon of Chichester. Although the building itself dates from the nineteenth century, this site has been connected with the cathedral for more than eight centuries. The house is named after Bishop George Bell, remembered for his commitment to peace, his support of the arts and his humanitarian work during the Second World War. One of the highlights of George Bell House is its beautiful enclosed walled garden. It is an incredibly peaceful place where the noise of the modern world seems to disappear. Just a few steps away stands Chichester Cathedral, one of England’s finest medieval cathedrals. Construction began in 1075, shortly after the Norman Conquest. The cathedral is famous for its separate medieval bell tower, a rare architectural feature in England. In 1861, the cathedral’s tall spire unexpectedly collapsed. Fortunately, it was later rebuilt by the renowned architect Sir George Gilbert Scott. Walking through Cathedral Close, it is easy to imagine monks, clergy and pilgrims passing along these same paths hundreds of years ago.
