Nasenscheidewand verkrümmt? 80% der OPs nutzlos - So öffnest du deine Atemwege

In Germany alone, approximately 80,000 nasal septum surgeries are performed annually. But studies show: In about 80% of patients, the effect demonstrably deteriorates after three to five years, or the situation has even worsened. This alarming statistic raises the question of whether surgical correction is always the right path. A slightly deviated nasal septum (septal deviation) is anatomically normal - very few people have a perfectly straight septum. Even with visible deviation, airflow can be sufficient. According to the physical Bernoulli effect, air accelerates at constrictions, similar to a partially compressed water hose. The actual breathing obstruction usually arises from the turbinates and their mucous membranes. These require continuous airflow to maintain a healthy state of tension. With insufficient nasal breathing, a vicious cycle develops: The mucous membranes become slack or swell, further impeding breathing. Additionally, there's the natural nasal cycle: In a rhythm of about two to six hours, the patency of the nostrils alternates. Scientific studies show varying success rates: For severe septal deviations, the subjective success rate is over 80%, for moderate severities about 50%, and for mild deviations - which paradoxically are operated on most frequently - only 30%. The often absent long-term success is explained by the fact that surgery changes the shape of the nasal septum but doesn't address the root cause: slack mucous membranes and faulty breathing patterns. Additionally, complications such as scar formation or, in rare extreme cases, "Empty Nose Syndrome" can occur. A promising non-invasive alternative is training natural functional patterns. This improves three coordinated functions: breathing, swallowing, and head balance. These significantly influence mucosal tension and airway patency. The Faceformer therapy offers neurophysiological training that coordinates these functions. With consistent use (2-3 times daily for about 10 minutes), initial results are noticeable after a few weeks, and nasal breathing can significantly improve after two to three months. Before deciding on surgery, thorough diagnostics should be performed that also consider functional aspects. For mild to moderate septal deviations, conservative methods like targeted breathing training can represent a low-risk and sustainable alternative. For severely pronounced deformities or after unsuccessful conservative therapy attempts, surgery may be the appropriate treatment option. The nose is not a simple passage system but a complex biological organ with diverse functions for breathing, immune defense, and even brain function. A differentiated treatment approach that considers individual circumstances promises the best results for free nasal breathing and thus for our health.
