Artist’s Biography Artist LEE Seung-chul Lee was in 1988, he graduated from the Department of Oriental Painting at the College of Fine Arts at Seoul National University, which is responsible for the higher education of artistic talents. He has been a permanent researcher at the Kansong Art Museum, which houses national treasures such as the Hun-minjeongeum Haeryebon (explanatory document of the Korean alphabet created in 1446) and works by Chusa Kim Jeong-hee (famous epigraphist and calligrapher) and Gyeomjae Jeong Seon (18th-century landscape painter). His research concentrates on oriental painting and Korean paper. Since 2013, he has been a professor in the Department of Painting at Dongduk Women’s University. He is also served as the director of Dongduk Women’s University’s Museum, Art Gallery, and Dongduk Art Gallery. In addition, He established the Specialized Graduate School of Minhwa (Korean folk painting) at Dongduk Women’s University and tirelessly works on art that puts the diversity and originality of 21st-century Korean Culture at the forefront of the global art market. He has held dozens of solo exhibitions and participated in over 100 group exhibitions, including ‘Tissue Bojagi’ in France, ‘Adhesion Paradox’ in New York, and ‘The Mystery of Color-East and West’ in Italy. He has presented at the ‘Comparative International Seminar’ at the Vatican Museum and the ‘Conference International Louvre - Un Papier d’hier pour demain’ at the Louvre in France. Beginning with the Korean Cultural Center in Italy in February 2023 and continuing with the Korean Cultural Center in Austria in May 2023. At the Korean Cultural Center in Hungary (February-June 2024) and the Korean Cultural Center in Los Angeles (August-September 2024), the first Asian painter to hold a European tour starting from overseas cultural centers under the theme of "Korean and Korean Colors" and "Korean Past and Present." He has authored the books ‘The Flower of Our Culture: Jinkyung Culture,’ which explores the most beautiful and brilliant aspects of Korean culture, and ‘Hanji,’ which covers traditional materials in oriental painting, as well as ‘Natural Dyeing in Korea,’ and ‘Research on Ink.’ Currently, his works are held in the collections of museums and galleries at home and abroad, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul, the National Art Bank, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Ulsan Museum of Contemporary Art, New York Chesh Artgate Gallery, and Beijing Artexit. Seungchul Lee is an artist working hard to reinterpret Hanji, a traditional material, with modern aesthetics. While working as a curator at the Kansong Museum of Art, he felt he needed to understand the funda-mental qualities of paper to draw properly. This led him to research the Korean traditional paper, Hanji. He collected materials such as artifacts and old books to satisfy his curiosity about the paper that has disappeared and no longer exists and devoted himself to research. His research confined itself to paper and covered other traditional materials and methods, such as ink and dyeing, from which he realized the importance of historical records in this process. Old books do not remain as mere records but serve as a guide to discovering the past and, at the same time, serve as bridges to both the present and future. In other words, they serve as a means of communication with the past and a starting point for new creations.
