水陸草木之花, 可愛者 甚蕃. 晋 陶淵明 獨愛菊., 自李唐來, 世人 甚愛牡丹, 余獨愛蓮之出淤泥而不染. 濯淸漣而不妖. 中通外直 不蔓不枝. 香遠益淸 亭亭淨植 可遠觀而不可褻玩焉.……… 周敦頤의 ‘愛蓮說 물과 땅위에서 자라는 풀과 나무. 꽃 중에 사랑할 만 한 것은 매우 많이 있다. 진(晋) 도연명은 유독 국화를 사랑했고 당(唐)나라 사람들은 모란을 좋아했다. 나는 홀로 연꽃을 사랑한다. 연꽃은 진흙 더러운 물속에 자라지만 그 더러움에 물들지 아니하고 깨끗한 꽃을 피운다. 연꽃은 잔물결에 씻겨도 요염한 빛이 없다. 연꽃의 속대는 텅 비어 위·아래가 통해 있고 겉대는 꼿꼿하게 쭉 뻗어있고, 넝쿨져 얽히는 일도 없고 오직 한 줄기 뿐. 분수 밖으로 불쑥 가지를 내미는 일도 없다. 또 연꽃 향기는 멀수록 더욱 맑고 멀찍이 서서 바라볼 수 있을 뿐 가까이 매만지며 즐길 수 없는 것은 우러러 바라볼 수는 있어도 함부로 할 수 없는 군자의 위엄을 닮았다. …… 宋代 儒學者인 周敦頤의 ‘愛蓮說’이다. 2002년 중국 남경 그리고 2013년 항주 서호에서 연꽃을 가까이에서 사생할 기회가 있었다. ‘애련설’의 내용처럼 멀리서 바라볼 수는 있지만 가까이 할 수 없는 것이 ‘연’임을 경험했다. 긴 시간 사생을 통해 얻은 점은 자연이 가장 훌륭한 스승이란 점이다. 옛 화보나 그림도 좋은 길잡이가 되지만, 연잎에 구르는 영롱한 물방울 꽃이 주는 생기·빛깔만큼 화흥을 불러일으키지는 못한다. 잎, 꽃줄기에는 작은 가시가 촘촘히 박혀있어서 녹색 잎과 대비되고 창끝 같은 새순, 물총새·청개구리·잠자리·꽃봉오리 떨어진 꽃잎·연밥. 그 어느 하나 군더더기 없이 깨끗한 느낌을 주는 것이 연꽃 사생의 즐거움이다. 연꽃을 그리는데 특별한 구도나 기법이 있는 것은 아니다. 가까이에서 관찰하고 사생하기를 반복하다 보면 저절로 연꽃이 눈에 선하게 들어온다. 사실과 사의 회화적 경계를 허물고 수천만 번의 붓질 속에서 기운생동의 경지를 만날 수 있다고 확신한다. 서리가 내린 늦가을 그 무성하던 연잎이 수면에 거꾸로 고개 숙인 모습을 바라보며 연꽃도 생·노·병·사의 윤회 속에 있구나 라는 생각을 해 본다. 2024. 10 통의동 문매헌에서 문봉선 Zhou Dunyi’s "On the Love of Lotus“ "Plants and trees grow in water and on land. Among flowers, there are many that are worthy of love. In the Jin dynasty, Tao Yuanming uniquely loved chrysanthemums, while people in the Tang dynasty favored peonies. I alone love the lotus. The lotus grows in muddy, dirty water but remains untainted, blooming into a pure flower. Even when washed by gentle waves, the lotus retains its elegance. The lotus stem is hollow, connecting the top and bottom, standing tall without intertwining, and it is a single stalk. It does not reach out beyond the fountain. Additionally, the fragrance of the lotus becomes clearer the farther away you are; you can only admire it from a distance, as it resembles the dignity of a noble person that can be gazed at but not recklessly touched."...... This is "On the Love of Lotus" by Zhou Dunyi, a Confucian scholar from the Song dynasty. In 2002, I had the opportunity to sketch lotuses up close in Nanjing, and again in 2013 at West Lake in Hangzhou. Like the content of "On the Love of Lotus," I experienced that the lotus is something to be admired from a distance but cannot be approached closely. Through long hours of sketching, I learned that nature is the greatest teacher. While old paintings and illustrations serve as good guides, they cannot evoke the vitality and colors brought by the sparkling water droplets rolling on the lotus leaves. The leaves and flower stems are densely dotted with tiny thorns, contrasting with the green leaves, alongside new shoots that resemble spear tips, kingfishers, frogs, dragonflies, flower buds, and fallen petals. Each element gives a clean and unembellished feeling, which is the joy of sketching the lotus. There are no special compositions or techniques for painting the lotus. By repeatedly observing and sketching closely, the lotus naturally becomes vivid in my eyes. I am convinced that by breaking down the boundaries between reality and representation, one can encounter a realm of vitality through countless brush strokes. Looking at the lush lotus leaves drooping upside down on the water's surface in late autumn after a frost, I ponder that the lotus too is caught in the cycle of birth, aging, illness, and death.
