Nara is a historic city, and attracts many tourists from both inside and outside the country, so why doesn't it have JR express trains? Long ago, there was a train called the Asuka Express that went from Nagoya to Wakayama, passing through Nara, but it was not popular and was discontinued after two and a half years. For the predecessor of JR, the Japanese National Railways, express trains were literally special express trains that only the upper class rode. The Nagoya-Osaka Express runs east to west through Nara Prefecture, and many of them stop within the prefecture. Luxury tourist express trains such as Shimakazeya, Aonoyoshi, and Blue Symphony also run as regular trains. Simply running express trains is not enough to compete with Kintetsu. JR West is so serious about it that they display a special Mahomahoroba logo on the direction sign, prepare automatic announcements, and distribute original goods to passengers.
