There is a slightly unusual section on the Tokaido Main Line, at the eastern end of the JR Central jurisdiction. Between Ogaki Station and Sekigahara Station. There was a station called Shin-Tarui Station here for over 30 years from 1944, at the end of World War II. I went to Tarui Town in Gifu Prefecture to find out how this station was built and why it was abolished. This place is called Sekigahara Pass, and it was the last remaining difficult section on the Tokaido Main Line, with a continuous gradient of 20‰. Downbound freight trains climbing the slope had to be PushPull (pushed from the front by a steam locomotive), which was a bottleneck in wartime transportation. To overcome this difficult section, the tracks on the downbound line were made to make a large detour along the foot of the mountain from Minami-Arao Signal Station, west of Ogaki Station, to Sekigahara Station. As a result, only upbound trains came to Tarui Station, which was located on the way, and downbound trains had no choice but to use Shin-Tarui Station, which was 3km away. This caused great inconvenience to the residents of Tarui. After the war, the Tarui Line was opened by restoring tracks to the vacant roadbed of the outbound line. Many of the outbound local trains that run on this section were made to stop at Tarui Station. Thanks to this, the inconvenience to the residents of Tarui was eliminated. Local trains continued to pass through Shin-Tarui Station, but it was a very inconvenient station because it was far from the center of town, only outbound trains came, and there were few trains. Due to a decrease in users, it was abolished in 1986. Shin-Tarui Station, which was abolished even though it was on the main Tokaido Main Line, still has the remains of the platform. This time, I would like to ride the Osaka Hida (Hida No. 36) of the Kiha 85 series, which will soon be gone (it was already gone at the time of the video's release), and enjoy the rear view of the outbound line of the Tokaido Main Line that passes through the former site of Shin-Tarui Station.
