On July 4, 1776, 13 British colonies in North America declared their independence from the Crown when their political representatives signed a Declaration of Independence. This "Independence Day" marked the beginning of a liberal world model that, despite all its shortcomings and aberrations, continues to set the standard for human development. We want to discuss this civilizational, technological, economic, scientific, and cultural success story from very personal perspectives: How do we experience the USA? What is the American mentality? What role do race, religion, media, weapons, the individual, society, education, patriotism, and the sense of infinity play? The discussion will feature Susanne Heger, Kontrafunk's US correspondent; Professor Jochen Hörisch, a literary scholar who taught in the USA for many years; and Collin McMahon, a German-American editor at Kontrafunk.
