In this video, I am incredibly proud to share a rare and historic piece of my family's heritage—the wedding of my eldest brother, Mekuria Hailu, and his beloved wife, Fantiye Moges, filmed 19 years ago (around 2007). The Beauty of the "Teklil" Ceremony In the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, the "Teklil" (ሥርዓተ ተክሊል) is the most sacred and honorable form of holy matrimony. It is reserved for couples who have preserved their purity and remained completely chaste (no physical intimacy, no kissing, and no living together) prior to their wedding day. This video beautifully captures the depth, purity, and spiritual weight of this ancient Christian marriage tradition. Nostalgic Memories & My Birthplace This beautiful ceremony was held in my birthplace, Merti Abadiska (also known as Achamo or Alaga Dureti), located 54 kilometers from Adama. As you watch this vintage footage, you will see my entire family, including my late parents (my mother and father), all of my brothers and sisters, and myself as a very young child running around! Where They Are Today This holy covenant has stood the test of time. Today, 19 years later, Mekuria and Fantiye are still living happily in the exact same village, raising their wonderful 16-year-old son, and growing stronger in love every single day.
