Elvis Presley - Riding The Rainbow - From First Take to the Master

Elvis Presley's 1962 movie "Kid Galahad" contained only six songs but all are of a more than decent standard and "Riding The Rainbow" is no exception. It is used to link two scenes together, whilst the characters in question are travelling between two locations. The presence of background musical accompaniment, is explained by having the main character, Walter Gulick, turning up the music on the radio, a justification which would be all too often ignored in later movies. Elvis recorded the song on 27 October 1961 at Radio Recorders' studio B in Hollywood and the tenth and final take was chosen as the RCA master and also for inclusion the upcoming movie. The fact that only half a dozen songs were recorded for the movie meant that no accompanying album was released. Instead RCA decided to release an EP, on 28 August 1962, which contained all the songs heard on the soundtrack. Two versions were recorded by Elvis, after nine takes and even the creation of a spliced master, the result was still deemed unsatisfactory and so a second version was attempted. This saw Elvis and the band run through a further seven takes with a brand new recording designation and therefore take numbering restarted. However, a splice was still required as there was dissatisfaction with the final few bars of the final take and so the last few bars from take nine of the first version was spliced onto the ending. As a result, the spliced version created from the first part was designated as an alternate master. As with all of these videos, to get the most out of the re-edited audio, I highly recommend you use ear /headphones and turn the volume up as much as you dare!
