Egas Moniz: Sem Ele, Portugal Nunca Teria Existido

In 1127, the army of the King of León and Castile besieged Guimarães. The young Afonso Henriques had no means to resist. It was then that Egas Moniz — the man who raised him, educated him, and shaped the character of Portugal's future first king — made a decision that would change everything. He walked out of the walls unarmed and pledged the only thing he had: his word. A word that would not be kept. Years later, when the promise of vassalage was broken by Afonso Henriques, Egas Moniz did something no one expected. He did not flee. He did not deny it. He traveled to Toledo, the capital of the enemy king, with his wife and children — all barefoot, all dressed as penitents, all with ropes around their necks. He offered their lives as payment for a promise that was not even his to keep. This is one of the most dramatic and least remembered episodes in the founding of Portugal. The story of the man without whom Afonso Henriques might never have become king — and whom official history almost allowed to be forgotten. Camões did not forget him. In Canto III of Os Lusíadas, Egas Moniz is immortalized in verse. His tomb at the Monastery of Paço de Sousa, in Penafiel, has carried the Toledo scene carved in stone for nearly nine centuries. In this video, we tell the full story: the siege of Guimarães in 1127, the impossible promise, the involuntary betrayal, and the sacrifice that was forever engraved in Portugal's memory. 🔔 Subscribe to the channel and hit the bell so you never miss the next episodes on the history of Portugal and its empires.
