Before Portugal had a king, it had a queen. Teresa of León ruled the County of Portucale for over fifteen years, signed documents as Ego Teresa Regina, brought the Knights Templar into the territory, and resisted the pressures of the Kingdom of León at a time when ruling alone as a woman was, in itself, an act of defiance. History turned her into the defeated mother, the regent who failed, the obstacle Afonso Henriques had to overcome. But what textbooks never said is that her son won using everything she left behind — the Templars she installed, the administrative structure she built, the Portucalense identity she protected. In this video we reconstruct Teresa's government from available medieval sources — the Chronica Gothorum, the royal documents of the County of Portucale, and the historiography of José Mattoso and Leontina Ventura — to answer the question official history never wanted to ask: what if Teresa was never the villain of this story?
