«Philosophie gibt es überall, wo Menschen sind» | Sternstunde Philosophie | SRF Kultur
Greece as the cradle of democracy, Europe as the continent of the Enlightenment – is that actually true? Or is this cultural self-image based on myths that are far removed from the facts and colonial, even racist, exclusion? A conversation about a new, truly global understanding of philosophy. It all began with the ancient Greeks, then came the Dark Ages, the Renaissance brought a new dawn, until the Enlightenment brought the light of reason and freedom to the modern world. All of this, of course, from Europe. All of this, of course, primarily thanks to brilliant male thinkers. This is the standard story the so-called West has been telling itself for a good 250 years. As the true cradle of philosophy, universal values, and modern science. But in the wake of new research and a truly global historiography, it is becoming increasingly clear how radically incomplete, grotesquely one-sided, in some cases simply false, and not least colonially and racistly narrow this view of the history of thought is. Is a broadened historical consciousness about to usher in a revolution in our entire self-understanding? And if so, what are the consequences for a philosophy and global culture of the future? Barbara Bleisch, together with philosopher Anke Graneß, author of the book "Philosophy in Africa," and philosopher Peter Adamson, host of the podcast "History of Philosophy without any gaps," explores the consequences and pitfalls of a decolonized history of philosophy.
