How Did Etruscan Influence Reach Pre Roman Britain?
How did a vessel inspired by Etruscan Italy end up buried in Iron Age Yorkshire centuries before the Roman conquest? The Melsonby Hoard is one of the most important archaeological discoveries ever made in Britain. Buried in North Yorkshire over 2,000 years ago, it contained more than 800 Iron Age objects, including chariots, horse harnesses, weapons, cauldrons, Mediterranean coral, and a remarkable vessel now known as the Yorkshire Lebes. According to the Yorkshire Museum, this vessel closely resembles a lebes — a wine-mixing bowl associated with the Etruscans of ancient Italy. Yet archaeologists believe it was probably made locally in Britain. So how did a vessel form associated with Etruscan Italy find its way into Iron Age Yorkshire? In this documentary, we examine the evidence from the Melsonby Hoard, explore long-distance trade networks linking Britain to continental Europe, and investigate the wider Mediterranean connections that existed centuries before the Roman conquest. Drawing upon archaeology, classical sources, and recent research, we explore what this extraordinary object reveals about Britain's place in the ancient world. 📍 Featuring footage from the Yorkshire Museum's exhibition: *Chariots, Treasure & Power: Secrets of the Melsonby Hoard* 📖 Interested in Britain's ancient trade networks?
