What Wainwright Did When MacArthur Left Him to Die in the Philippines

In December 1941, Japan gave General Homma 50 days to conquer the Philippines. It took 150. The man who bought that time was Lieutenant General Jonathan Wainwright — left in command after MacArthur was ordered to Australia, with no food, no ammunition, and no reinforcements coming. For 150 days, his men fought on half rations, battling malaria, dysentery, and an enemy that outnumbered them at every turn. When Bataan fell, Wainwright held Corregidor for one more month. When Corregidor fell, he spent three years as the highest-ranking American prisoner of war in Japanese captivity. On September 2, 1945, he stood on the deck of the USS Missouri — directly behind MacArthur — and watched Japan sign its unconditional surrender. This is the story of what 150 days of suffering bought for the rest of the world. If your father or grandfather served in the Pacific, drop his name and unit in the comments. Don't let his story disappear. This video uses archival materials and original terminology from the World War II era for historical research and educational purposes only.
