Comienza la difícil tarea del presidente electo para conformar coalición de gobierno en el Congreso
One of the main challenges facing President-elect Abelardo De La Espriella is securing sufficient governance to implement the proposals he made during the campaign, primarily through the Congress of the Republic. On the one hand, the president-elect will soon have to reveal how he intends to unify the governing coalition, given that De La Espriella himself warned during the campaign that his relationship with political parties would not be mediated by the usual practices, such as handing over bureaucratic positions or representation in the Executive branch in exchange for the support of traditional political parties and their congressmen. It is also crucial to know who will be his Minister of the Interior. In fact, last Saturday, the day before the second round of voting, the Defenders of the Homeland movement, led by President-elect Abelardo De La Espriella, published a statement warning the elected members of Congress that they “will have a historic responsibility: to decide whether they support the reforms that Colombia needs or whether they put their personal interests before the higher interests of the nation.” He added that “if some sectors of Congress renounce this responsibility and betray the mandate of the people, they will find themselves facing a government of popular origin, with popular strength, and with a direct connection to millions of Colombians who are no longer willing to be ignored.” However, in his victory speech on Sunday, the president-elect, while warning that he would not return to traditional relationships with the political class, said that there are no winners or losers and that he will govern for everyone. Incidentally, Tomás Uribe, son of former president Álvaro Uribe, said on his social media that humility demands recognizing that 13 million compatriots voted for Petro's political project and called for building more humility and empathy to overcome poverty and accelerate economic growth. For a traditional governing coalition to form in Congress, the president-elect will need the support of the Democratic Center party, which recently faced a backlash from Carlos Suárez, strategist and right-hand man of Abelardo De La Espriella. In an interview with Semana magazine, Suárez stated, more or less, that Paloma Valencia, the Democratic Center, and Álvaro Uribe represent the past, the same old politicians and political maneuvering. He added that, in his opinion, Uribe “has been relegated to the role of a historic former president who will surely have a place in history. But his 25 years of political hegemony ended the era of the Tiger.” Former President Uribe responded on social media, saying: “Carlos Suárez demonstrated his strategic skills when he took Piedad Córdoba and Cepeda to speak with extradited former paramilitaries to ask about me.” Now radio isn't just heard, it's seen!
