Former Interior Minister Juan Fernando Cristo defended the results of the presidential runoff election, asserting that it is “normal” for numerous municipalities across the country to register overwhelmingly favorable votes for Iván Cepeda, even in cases where all reported votes favored the candidate of the Alliance for Life. During an interview with Mañanas Blu, Cristo responded to questions raised after the presidential elections, in which opposition groups have alleged irregularities in regions of southwestern Colombia, where Cepeda obtained results as high as 100%. The former official rejected claims linking these votes to pressure from illegal armed groups, stating that this is a narrative promoted by far-right sectors. “Yes, it seems normal to me; there are many peace zones in Colombia. Look at the plebiscite data from Nariño and Cauca,” Cristo asserted when asked about reports indicating that in hundreds of polling stations, 100% of the votes favored the progressive candidate. Cristo denies evidence of “gun votes” One of the most controversial topics of the conversation was the discussion about the so-called “gun vote,” a term used by some political sectors to describe the potential influence of armed groups on voting behavior in certain areas of the country. Regarding this hypothesis, Cristo was emphatic in stating that there is no conclusive evidence demonstrating that the votes in favor of Cepeda were the result of intimidation. The former minister argued that if the same logic were applied to other regions of the country with a presence of illegal armed groups, the results obtained by the winning candidate, Abelardo De La Espriella, should also be questioned. “I don’t see any concrete evidence that there was armed pressure to force people to vote for Iván Cepeda, just as I don’t have any evidence that Abelardo de la Espriella’s 90 or 95% of the vote was due to armed pressure,” he stated. According to Cristo, the electoral patterns observed in departments like Nariño, Cauca, and Chocó are similar to the results recorded since the 2016 peace referendum, reflecting historical political trends rather than circumstantial phenomena.
