Krijg je echt dementie van TikTok? De harde feiten
š§ Digital dementia, in other words: becoming forgetful from scrolling on your phone. In recent years, videos and news reports warning of this āform of Alzheimerāsā and ābrain damageā have been appearing more and more frequently. But what evidence is there for this so-called digital dementia? What happens in your brain? What does science say about this? And, suppose you suffer from it, what can you do about it? On average, young people and young adults between the ages of 16 and 30 spend about 4.5 hours a day on their phones. And for many, that daily screen time is probably even higher. Scrolling on TikTok, YouTube shorts, Insta reels: those who do this a lot seem to negatively affect their cognitive skills, such as memory and concentration. Pepijn (20) and Rens Schepens (19) participated in the podcast Het Brokkelbrein by Judith van Loon. During that podcast, the brothers tried to detox from their phones for a year: much less screen time than usual, scrolling as little as possible, and adopting new habits. Pepijn and Rens kept track of the impact the digital detox had on their lives and, consequently, on their cognitive abilities. How are their concentration, focus, memory, and motivation doing 1.5 years after they started the podcast? And what scientific evidence is there for digital dementia? What happens in the brain of someone who scrolls a lot on their phone? Neuropsychologist Erik Scherder takes us inside the brain and explains what brain research has been done on ādigital dementiaā. And those same brain studies also reveal a clue as to how best to deal with digital dementia. Thanks to researcher Evgenia Salta of the Netherlands Brain Institute for reviewing the cited studies. āāā 0:00 - Intro 0:27 - How many phone numbers do you still know by heart? 1:22 - Detox for Pepijn and Rens 3:30 - Afraid of modern technology 4:09 - Scientific evidence? 6:11 - How to detox 8:06 - Digital dementia in your brain 9:21 - Pepijn and Rens after their detox 10:37 - Impact on memory and concentration āāā #smartphone #dementia #brain āāā Want to see more?
