XI Encuentro Mundial de Vaquería 2017 - Cumaral, Meta - TvAgro por Juan Gonzalo Angel
Twitter @juangangel The vaquería, in Yucatán, Mexico, is a popular festival whose origins date back to the colonial era, when the Spanish, who had conquered the region and dedicated themselves to raising cattle on their haciendas, would call their workers to "brand" their herds and offer, or allow, a collective celebration or dance as a ceremony prelude to the branding, which involved considerable physical effort. The entire town or group of ranchers participated enthusiastically in the popular festival to celebrate the economic boom brought about by the growth of the cattle herd. The celebration was held under the religious auspices of the town's patron saint. Its duration varied and depended on the financial means of the organizers or participants, but it could extend for several days. Special festive attire was worn on such occasions, when residents of haciendas or neighboring villages were usually invited, particularly young girls to augment the number of dancers who provided the main collective spectacle. The jarana was the predominant dance during the festival. During the vaquerías, work was completely suspended from early in the morning. The festival took place in the hacienda's main square or in the corridors of the main building located in what was called the hacienda's main square, where the owners or landowners normally resided.
