This statement was corroborated by reports from the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences and the hospital that treated the three children present, which found no evidence of mistreatment or sexual abuse. The Attorney General's Office is conducting a preliminary investigation against Gail Grant, a 36-year-old American citizen originally from Texas. The foreigner was labeled a “pedophile” on social media after an inconclusive video circulated showing him behind the child, wrapping his arms around the child's abdomen. Later reports clarified that the action was abdominal thrusts to help the child, who was possibly choking. The scene sparked outrage among neighbors and prompted an initial report from the Secretary of Security, César Restrepo. The head of state rushed to issue a judgment before knowing the results of the official investigations. On his Twitter account, Petro initially stated: “The American pedophile is from Texas and right-wing in the US. This demonstrates the double standards and manipulation of the electorate.” Eight hours later, faced with medical and institutional evidence, the president issued a retraction: “I must inform Colombian society, because my commitment is to the truth, that the American citizen originally from Texas, arrested in an apartment in northern Bogotá, apparently did not rape any of his adopted children in Colombia.” Petro explained that the man “took him out onto the balcony because he was choking on his food” and that “the images misled Colombians.” Following the retraction, Gail Grant was released this Tuesday.
