A reading from the Second Book of Kings 4:8-11, 14-16a One day Elisha passed through Shunem. A prominent woman lived there, and she urged him to stay for a meal. From then on, he stopped there to eat whenever he passed by. She said to her husband, “I am certain that this is a holy man of God who always comes to visit us. Let’s build a small room on the roof and put a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp in it, so that when he comes he can rest.” The day came when Elisha approached and went to the upper room, where he lay down. Then Elisha asked himself, “What can we do for her?” Gejazi, his servant, answered, “Unfortunately, she has no sons, and her husband is old.” Elisha told Gehazi to call her. He called her, and she stood at the entrance. Elisha said to him, “About this time next year, you will be holding a son in your arms.” Psalm 88:2-3, 16-17, 18-19 R/. I will sing of the Lord’s great love forever. I will sing of the Lord’s great love forever; I will proclaim your faithfulness through all generations. For you said, “Mercy stands firm forever,” you have established your faithfulness more firmly than the heavens. R/. Blessed are the people who know the joyful sound; they walk, O Lord, in the light of your face. Your name is their joy every day, your righteousness is their pride. R/. For you are their glory and their strength, and by your favor you exalt our horn. For the Lord is our shield, and the Holy One of Israel is our King. R/. A reading from the letter of the apostle Saint Paul to the Romans 6:3-4. 8-11 Brothers and sisters: All of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death. We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. For if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has dominion over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew 10:37-42 At that time, Jesus said to his apostles: “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it. Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever receives a righteous person because he is righteous will receive a righteous person’s reward. And whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”
