A reading from Lamentations (2:2, 10-14, 18-19): The Lord has destroyed without pity all the dwellings of Jacob; in his anger he has demolished the strongholds of Judah. He has cast down to the ground in dishonor the king and the princes. The elders of Zion sit on the ground in silence; they put dust on their heads and clothe themselves in sackcloth. The young women of Jerusalem bow their heads to the ground. My eyes are spent with tears, my heart is filled with bitterness; my bile is poured out on the ground because of the ruin of the capital of my people. Children and infants faint in the streets of the city. They ask their mothers, “Where is bread and wine?” as they faint like the wounded in the streets of the city, as they die in their mothers’ arms. Who can compare with you, or be like you, city of Jerusalem? To whom shall I compare you, O virgin Zion, to comfort you? Your sorrow is as vast as the sea; who can heal you? Your prophets offered you false and deceptive visions; they did not reveal your sins to change your fate, but announced to you false and seductive visions. Cry out to the Lord with all your soul, wail, O Zion; pour out your tears day and night; give yourself no rest, let your eyes no slumber. Arise and cry out at night, at the changing of the guard; pour out your heart like water before the Lord; lift up your hands to him for the lives of your children, who faint from hunger at the crossroads. The Word of the Lord Psalm Psalm 73 R/. Do not forget the lives of your poor beyond repair Why, O God, do you always forsake us, and why does your anger burn against the sheep of your pasture? Remember the community you acquired long ago, the tribe you redeemed as your possession, Mount Zion, where you made your dwelling place. R/. Turn your steps to these hopeless ruins; the enemy has utterly destroyed the sanctuary. The aggressors roared in the midst of your assembly, raising their own banners. R/. At the upper entrance, they hacked down the framework with axes; then, with hammers and clubs, they smashed all the sculptures. They set fire to your sanctuary, demolishing and profaning the dwelling place of your name. R/. Remember your covenant: for the corners of the land are filled with violence. Let not the humble go away disappointed, but let the poor and afflicted praise your name. R/. Gospel A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew (8:5-17): At that time, when Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, pleading with him, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, suffering terribly.” Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.” But the centurion replied, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. But only say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I too am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. I tell you, many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, But the citizens of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Then he said to the centurion, “Go home, and let it be done just as you believed it would.” And the servant was healed at that moment. When Jesus came to Peter’s house, he found Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. He took her by the hand, and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on them. That evening, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: “He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases.” The Word of the Lord
