The rural musicians of Chiloé carry the sonic memory of celebration. The inherited traditions of work, neighborly ties, festivities, and affections. Listening to this memory brings to the surface the spirit of rural Chiloé, with its energy and southern winds. We return to the old singer, to feel the voice that lives in the minds and souls of his family, his neighbors, and in the very musical history of the islands. Don Gerónimo Barría was born in San Juan on May 20, 1919. By the age of 18, he was already playing the guitar and was in high demand at community workdays and rural celebrations. Like every Chilote of the 20th century, he traveled throughout Patagonia in Argentina and eventually returned to Puchaurán, to his wife Dolores and his children Orfelia, Juan, Manuel, and Vignolia. In the 1980s, he began involving his children and grandchildren in music, eventually forming a group that performed his repertoire. It is they who, on this CD, revive the spirit of traditional celebration and community work that Don Gerónimo bequeathed to them.
