Nasal polyps, or rather, sinus polyps, are much more common than you might think. But what symptoms do nasal polyps cause and when is it necessary to remove them? The causes of nasal polyps are still unclear. The most widely accepted theories link an inflammatory state of the respiratory mucosa (sinusitis, allergies, rhinitis, etc.) as a predisposing pathological factor. At the same time, some authors have noted a genetic predisposition for patients affected by these formations. The diagnosis of nasal polyps can be made in various ways. First and foremost, through direct visualization performed by an ENT or maxillofacial surgeon with rigid or flexible fiberoptics. This assessment is always important along with a thorough medical history to assess the possible presence of conditions such as sinusitis, allergies, or a family history of nasal polyps. Establishing this condition requires further diagnostic tests, such as a CT scan of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, to assess the true extent. Nasal polyps can be treated medically or surgically. Medical treatment can be performed for small nasal polyps and essentially involves corticosteroid therapy. Surgical treatment, on the other hand, involves the removal of all polyp-like formations within the nasal cavity using miniaturized instruments and direct fiberoptic vision. However, beyond simple removal or corticosteroid therapy, it is always necessary to combine an allergy assessment (in patients with allergies or suspected allergies) and antibiotic therapy (in those associated with bacterial or fungal infections).
