These are sometimes called a total nutrient admixture (TNA) and dextrose-amino acid formulation, respectively. You will see both kinds of parenteral nutrition defined, and then you will learn about some of the major differences, some of which can be perceived as advantages and disadvantages of each. In short, a 3-in-1 contains all of the essential nutrients in 1 bag – dextrose, amino acids, lipids, vitamins, minerals, and water, if needed. A 2-in-1 contains all of the essential nutrients except for lipids. When a 2-in-1 formulation is provided, an intravenous fat emulsion can be infused separately as a secondary infusion. This is commonly referred to as a “piggyback” infusion. _____________________________________ ✨ Make sure you subscribe to @clinicalnutritionuniversity so you can continue to build your knowledge and skills 📸 Follow me on Instagram: / mitchellzandes _____________________________________ 📚 Chapters for this video: 0:00 What is the difference between 3-in-1 and 2-in-1 parenteral nutrition? 0:21 Definitions 1:29 Hang time 2:28 Stability/Compatability 2:41 Cracking of lipid emulsion 3:42 Calcium phosphate precipitation 4:33 Compatibility of medications 5:02 Advancements in technology 5:43 Convenience and cost 7:26 Summary _____________________________________ Thank you for supporting my work on YouTube! 🙌🏼 #medicalnutritiontherapy #parenteralnutrition #dietitian
