What Hams Do… Ep.#6 – Public Service in Amateur Radio
Throughout North America, Amateur Radio Operators are out on the streets and roads, mountain passes, rivers and coastlines keeping participants in major public events safe. A prime example is the annual Multiple Sclerosis Society’s 150 mile bike ride from Cherry Hill, New Jersey near Philadelphia, to the beautiful shore town of Ocean City, NJ – a 75 mile trek each way. In 2021, 149 Amateur Radio Operators gave up the last weekend in September to help keep nearly 4,000 bicyclists stay safe as they raised more than $3,500,000 to help those suffering with this horrible disease. In this program, you’ll learn how Amateur Radio Operators, also called hams, make such public events possible as volunteers. It’s part of the tradition of public service in Amateur Radio that dates back to the earliest days of this fascinating hobby in the early 20th century. If you’re interested in paying it forward, or giving back to your community, Amateur Radio offers many opportunities you’ll want to learn about. Links mentioned in the program: 1.
