CEBOLLERAS NUEVA Y VIEJA DESDE SOMOSIERRA | SIERRA DE GUADARRAMA-MADRID/SEGOVIA/GUADALAJARA

A circular route ascending from the Somosierra pass (Madrid) to the peaks of Cebollera Nueva (1,834 m) and Cebollera Vieja or Tres Provincias (2,198 m), passing through the Somosierra pastureland, which boasts one of the few birch forests in the Central System. At the beginning, we will visit this beautiful forest with centuries-old birch trees, Pyrenean oaks, and other species more typical of the mountains of northern Spain, such as hazel, holly, and rowan. Further up, we will cross a replanted Scots pine and black pine forest via paths, forest tracks, and firebreaks to reach the strategic viewpoint of Cebollera Nueva, where there are remains of buildings from the Spanish Civil War. From here, we continue along the ridge to the summit of Cebollera Nueva or Tres Provincias, where the provinces of Madrid, Segovia, and Guadalajara meet. The descent follows trails and firebreaks back to Somosierra, passing by the beautiful and popular Litueros waterfall, the source of the Duratón River. It's a long route, mostly along trails, tracks, and firebreaks, without much difficulty, although it's not marked. You'll find cairns in some places and a few springs, which I've included in the report. It's best to fill up your water bottles at these springs, as there's a lot of free-roaming livestock (mainly cows and horses). This report was filmed in November 2020.
