It lies on the Stelserberg above Schiers and is protected by Pro Natura. The lake is best known for a botanical phenomenon: it is home to the highest natural habitat of the white water lily in all of Europe. Highlights & Special Features • Carpet of water lilies: In summer, the water’s surface transforms into a sea of flowers. The plants share this protected space with rare dragonfly species such as the small marsh hawker. • Unique Panorama: From the shore, you can enjoy an unobstructed view of the striking Rätikon mountain range and the famous Schweizertor. • Stop for a Refreshment: Just about 400 meters west of the lake, the rustic Berghaus zum See invites you to enjoy regional specialties on its sun terrace (Note: Cash or Twint only). Popular Hiking Routes The high plateau is a classic area for easy to moderately difficult hikes: • Leisurely loop trail starting from Mottis (approx. 1.5 hours): The PostBus goes to the Stels mountain station in Mottis. From there, an easy trail leads past alpine pastures up to the lake and back past the mountain hut. • Moorland hike from St. Antönien (approx. 3.5 hours): This varied route leads through pristine, protected marshlands and over wooden boardwalks directly to Lake Stels. • Summit hike via the “Chrüz” (approx. 4 hours): From the lake, you can extend your hike to climb the Chrüz (2,195 m), a mountain offering panoramic views, from which you can enjoy a perfect bird’s-eye view of Lake Stels.
