The Four Stages — What Progress on the Path Actually Looks Like
The Buddha described ten specific bonds that keep YOU cycling in suffering. They don't all drop at once. They drop in a specific sequence, in four stages, each one leaving you lighter, clearer, closer to the end of the road. If you've ever wondered whether this path is going somewhere — whether there are waypoints between here and full liberation — there are. And the first one may be closer to your reach than you think. In this video: • The binary assumption: enlightened or not — why it makes the path impossible • The map: four stages, ten fetters, overview • Catalog bridge: waypoints between satipaṭṭhāna (#28) and nibbāna (#25) • Ten fetters as map of cost: five lower fetters in detail • Sakkāyadiṭṭhi: twenty forms via [MN 44] — Dhammadinnnā's precision • Vicikicchā, sīlabbata-parāmāsa, kāma-rāga, byāpāda • Khemaka Sutta [SN 22.89] SET-PIECE (4-5 min): monk near death, precise self-diagnosis — "I no longer hold the view... and yet 'I am' still lingers" • Sakkāyadiṭṭhi ≠ anatṭā fully — the crucial distinction • Ṭhānissaro vs Bodhi on anatṭā: both presented • Upper five fetters brief: rūpa-rāga, arūpa-rāga, māna, uddhacca, avijjā — "the last thing before the last thing is simply 'I am'" • Stream-entry deep treatment: four factors [SN 55.1] • Aveccapp asāda: verified confidence — "not hearsay, direct seeing" • Named lay stream-enterers: Sarakāni the drinker [SN 55.24-25], Anāthapiṇḍika, Dīghāvu, Citta • Dhammacakkhu: "whatever arises, ceases. Doubt about this ceases." • Three subtypes of stream-enterer [AN 3.86]: seven lives, two-three lives, one more • Accessibility confirmed: lay access (Ṭhānissaro + Bodhi) • AN 10.61 rain→ocean + AN 7.71/SN 22.101 adze-handle + AN 8.19 gradual slope • Anti-spiritual-materialism: "Do not track your stage. The self that tracks stages is the same self stream-entry would dissolve." • Dhammacakkhu formula slow, final: "Whatever is subject to origination — is all subject to cessation." ─────────── Sources & References: • Cūḷavedalla Sutta (MN 44) — Dhammadinnnā on twenty forms of sakkāyadiṭṭhi • Khemaka Sutta (SN 22.89) — "I am" residue after first three fetters drop • Veranḍḍaka Sutta (SN 55.1) — Four factors of stream-entry • Sarakāni Sutta (SN 55.24-25) — Lay stream-enterer (the drinker) • AN 3.86 — Three subtypes of stream-enterer • Anguttara passage AN 10.61 — Rain into ocean (gradual entry) • Adze-handle Sutta (SN 22.101 / AN 7.71) — Gradual wearing away • AN 8.19 — Gradual slope toward the ocean • Saṃyojana Saṃyutta (SN 45) — Ten fetters overview • Ṭhānissaro Bhikkhu — "The Path of Concentration and Mindfulness" (dhammatalks.org) • Bodhi, Bhikkhu — "The Connected Discourses" — stream-entry treatment Sutta sources: accesstoinsight.org | dhammatalks.org ─────────── ▶ This channel uses Buddhist wisdom as a lens to understand life — in dialogue with the whole of human knowledge.
