Without Swords — How Buddhism Became a World Religion
In 261 BCE, the Mauryan emperor Ashoka won the greatest military victory of his career. He stood in the kingdom of Kalinga surrounded by 100,000 dead. He had won. And he was horrified by what he had done. If you've wondered why Buddhism eventually reached your living room — tonight is the answer. No crusades, no forced conversions. How it happened. In Sri Lanka today, there is a tree. It has been growing, continuously, for 2,300 years. It was planted from a cutting of the Bodhi tree under which the Buddha sat. Ashoka's daughter carried it across the ocean. The tree is still there. In this video: • Mauryan Empire (~5 million sq km); source hierarchy stated explicitly: edicts = PRIMARY, chronicles = SECONDARY, hagiography = LEGEND • Prinsep decipherment "in the late 1830s" • Kalinga (261 BCE): Rock Edict XIII opening (Olivelle translation) + casualty/remorse passage (Thapar, attributed) • Edict XIII absent from Kalinga itself (Dhauli/Jaugada): "he did not broadcast his apology to the people he had just devastated" • Minor Rock Edict I: gradual conversion, already upāsaka before Kalinga • Thapar/Lahiri debate: voiced without editorial preference • Dhamma ≠ exclusively Buddhist: eusebeia (Greek), Aramaic "truth," tolerance for all sects • Rock Edict XII: tolerance passage (Dhammika + Sen gloss) • Personal Buddhist conviction (Bairāṭ edict) vs. ecumenical public Dhamma • Kāḿama connection (#34) • Missions: edicts CLAIM five Greek kings (unconfirmed in Western sources); Sri Lanka best documented • Mahinda son vs. brother discrepancy (chronicle uncertainty) • Sanghamittā + Bodhi tree cutting (tradition + archaeology confirms broad fact) • Silk Road, pilgrims, monastic communities • "Without swords" precise formulation: transmission mechanism, NOT absence of all Buddhist violence • Buddhist violence acknowledged honestly: Sri Lanka, Myanmar, wartime Japan • Forest peoples warning in Edict XIII: Ashoka was not a pacifist • Dhamma as governance: Pillar Edict VII • Decline: Thapar rejects "ahimsa-weakened-military" theory • Close: Srī Maha Bodhi tree ("oldest human-planted tree with documented planting date, traditionally 288 BCE per the chronicles"); 2 million+ Poson pilgrims; "4,000 words in stone, still readable today" ─────────── NOTE ON SOURCES: Source hierarchy stated on screen throughout: edicts = primary sources; chronicles (Mahavamsa, Dipavamsa) = secondary, written centuries later; hagiography = acknowledged as legend. "99 brothers" = hagiographical. Prinsep decipherment dated precisely. Thapar and Lahiri debate presented without editorial preference. Edict XIII absence from Kalinga itself noted. Buddhist violence acknowledged (not sanitized).
