La campana antica di Riva Valdobbia, Alagna Valsesia (VC)

The mediaeval church dedicated to St Michael the Archangel was destroyed in 1640 by a torrent flood. The inhabitants of Riva (Vercelli, Italy) moved the parish to the oratory dedicated to the Virgin Mary, built in 1400 and extended in the 16th century with the raising of the bell tower and the casting of a bell in F sharp in 1545. f' sharp The magnificent frescoed façade was embellished in 1661 with the construction of a second bell tower, which houses five more bells in D flat major. The four smaller bells were added in the 20th century to the large bell tower, cast in 1717. In the video, the original bell of the left bell tower is chiming, a rare occurrence during the year. It is the oldest bell in the valley, one of the oldest in Piedmont. The first church became a parish in 1326, when it gained independence from the most important church in the valley. The inhabitants transferred the parish title to the new church, whose façade was entirely frescoed in 1597. The beauty of the frescoes is so great that the church was declared a national monument. Many figures of saints are painted on the façade, awaiting the Last Judgement, as in Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel. Work on the new parish church resumed in 1735, retaining the double dedication to the Assumption and St Michael as the artistic theme. The interior is somewhere between Baroque and Neoclassical and contains a large number of works of art from the numerous churches scattered over the Alps. Of particular beauty are the marble high altar from 1749, the choir, the pulpit and especially the 12th century baptismal font. From the top of the bell towers there is an exceptional Alpine panorama towards Monte Rosa.
