How to castnet pilchards and pinfish on the flats - An easy bait catching tutorial. I like to find a flat with a good mixture of grass and sand in three to four feet of water. You are going to need a few essential ingredients, I personally like mixing menhaden oil, Purina fish food, and water. I typically fill my Yeti buck a quarter of the way up with Purina and then add a few squirts of menhaden. The key to the perfect consistency is to add water until you get a doh-like texture. Start making quarter-sized balls and toss them near the edge of the grass. I do this for about five to ten minutes or until the bit arrives. Now it is show time, can you make the perfect cast and blackout the live well? I prefer a 10 foot, 1/4 inch mesh net. 1.5lbs per foot is ideal but you can go lighter on the shallow flats.
