Probably one of the most beneficial lessons early on in my art career was learning the importance of Blocking In a painting at the initial stages. This technique is not only a wonderful way to begin a painting, but fortunately it's also an easy technique when you learn the basics. I find that BLOCKING IN produces results that give a painting a more harmonious feel and a cohesiveness with color and value. And this technique is one that works across all mediums... not just soft pastel.
