How to Begin an Impressionistic Painting - New Technique Explained

Does your work suffer from being tight, lacking energy and life? Try this New underpainting technique where I will share how to begin an Impressionistic Painting. I recently recalled a technique I had tried at the suggestion of a fellow artist years ago, and I couldn't believe I had forgotten about it. Here is the Technique (products mentioned will be listed below): 1. Apply an initial layer of pastel for an Underpainting (blocking in big shapes) 2. This can be done on any pastel surface (that is water friendly), or even watercolor paper (as I use in the demo) 3. Apply Matte Medium with a brush, or my technique of a kitchen scrubbie 4. The Pastel will basically turn into paint and you can artistically spread it around for a loose and painterly beginning. 5. Let it dry. 6. Start painting- if you are using an already prepared Sanded Pastel Surface 7. If you are using watercolor paper (as I am in the tutorial) apply a product to give it some grit for the pastel application. You can use Liquitex Clear Gesso or Golden Pastel Ground. Both will allow the underpainting to show through. 8. Begin your pastel painting. 9. TIP- If you use the Clear Gesso application, you may want to blend the initial layer. Blending tools can be a simple paper towel, a piece of pipe foam insulation, or my technique using a shammy (chamois) cloth.
