El bálsamo que financió la conquista y que los dermatólogos usan en secreto?
Balsam of Peru has been called by the wrong name for 500 years—and your drugstore creams still use it without anyone correcting it. It doesn't come from Peru. It never did. The mistake is on every cosmetic label in the world, and the story behind it is darker than you might imagine. Read to the end—the correct name would change a lot, and there are concrete reasons why no one has changed it. The tree that produces what's called balsam of Peru grows on the volcanic slopes of El Salvador and Guatemala, not Peru. Its scientific name is Myroxylon balsamum var. pereirae, and the Pipil people used it as a healing agent, antiseptic, and food preservative centuries before the arrival of the Spanish. The geographical error arose in the 16th century, when the colonial bureaucracy grouped everything that arrived from the American Pacific to the port of Seville under the generic term "from Peru." Nicolás Monardes described it with astonishment in 1565. Francisco Hernández de Toledo identified its true origin, but his manuscripts burned at El Escorial. The trade was already too profitable to correct the name. Today, the balsam is still found in dermatological ointments, eczema creams, and high-end tobacco preservatives—and it appears in the pharmacopoeias of more than 40 countries under the same name a colonial official mistakenly noted five centuries ago. Modern research has identified its active compounds: benzyl cinnamate, benzyl benzoate, benzoic acid, and vanillin, with documented antiseptic, antiparasitic, and anti-inflammatory activity—exactly what the Pipil people knew without the need for a chromatograph. This video reconstructs the trade route, the persistent error, and the paradox that El Salvador exported knowledge to the world that the world never acknowledged.
