Светильники на мусульманском востоке | Кураторская экскурсия
The image of light was incredibly widespread in Islamic art, as it was used by artists, poets, and philosophers to describe the divine. Because of this, lamps and their depictions on a variety of materials occupy a special place in the art of Muslim countries. The exhibition showcases the diversity of lamp forms in the Muslim East and the many uses they served from the 7th to the 20th centuries. Particular emphasis is placed on the historical context and evolution of these forms, as well as the symbolism of lamp depictions in various materials. Another theme of the exhibition is the coexistence of Muslim culture with Middle Eastern Christian culture, which also used similar forms and images. The exhibition's curator, Doctor of Philology and Senior Researcher in the Hermitage's Oriental Department, Anton Dmitrievich Pritula, speaks about the exhibition.
