The Deathworld Girl Called It Interesting. The Academy Didn't. | HFY Sci-Fi

He Pulled Out a Blade During the Lesson The Deathworld Girl Just Smiled and Ended It The Coalition Military Academy's tactical curriculum had been trying to find Cadet Fen Ashby's threshold for seven months. She was twenty years old, human, from Carthis — a Class Four deathworld. The Coalition database described it under "recurrent lethal phenomena" and listed the non-adapted survival rate as "not recommended for study due to insufficient surviving data points." Fen called it home. Instructor Greth drew the training blade — the standard high-stress inducer for human cadets — pointed it across the amphitheater floor, and gave her five seconds to demonstrate her threat response. She looked at the blade. Looked at him. Smiled. "Instructor," she said pleasantly, "you're already in range." What happened in the next one point four seconds is still being reviewed at reduced drone footage speed. Greth advanced. Fen moved — once, precisely — and the blade was pointing at the floor, at an angle Greth hadn't put it in, from a position half a meter closer to her than he'd intended to be. He looked at his wrist. At the blade. At her. "That was not in your file." "It's from home," she said. Not boasting. Just accurate. The post-session review took three hours, two additional senior instructors, and a lengthy consultation of the Carthis predator response database that the chair described as "illuminating" — in the sense that it recontextualized everything. Greth filed a supplementary note: She was right. I was already in range. I should have known that from her file. I will know it now. That evening in the commons, her friend asked how the session went. "Interesting," Fen said. "I think he'll adjust the scenario. It'll be more useful that way." The reduced-speed clip was circulating through every year group in the academy. She was already thinking about the next useful thing. 🔔 Subscribe for weekly HFY Sci-Fi stories 👍 Like if "you're already in range" is the best opening line possible 💬 Comment: Did you catch the motion blur detail? #hfy #hfystories #scifi #scifishortstory #Scifiacademy
