The notice was posted near a board she hadn't passed. Essa Thren was twenty-two, six weeks stranded, carefully managing forty-three station credits. The tray cost forty-seven. The terminal declined. She reached for the grain portion to set it aside — the calculation of someone who has practiced this problem and has a methodology for it. "What's the total." She turned. A soldier. Early forties, salt-and-pepper hair, brown eyes with the quality of someone who had just assessed a situation and made a decision about it. He placed a credit chip on the counter with the economy of someone performing a task rather than making a gesture. "Run it," he said. The terminal made the other sound. He did not look at her while doing any of it. He simply picked up his tray and moved toward the tables, in the natural way of someone who has done a thing and considers it done. She said thank you. He paused. "Six weeks is a long time to manage on station credits," he said. "The exchange block lifts in forty days when Sector Nine opens. Your research posting will still be there. Nobody's going anywhere." He had looked it up. Three weeks of waiting had apparently produced time for that. Essa followed him to the corner table because the alternative was eating alone, and because nothing about the previous ninety seconds had given her a reason to walk away from the first person in six weeks who had explained her situation to her rather than leaving her to figure it out eventually. Behind them, Brant was still telling the story to the next person in line.
