AMHARA | Can Ethiopia Survive?

This video explores the escalating Amhara conflict in Ethiopia and its potential to spark a wider civil war that threatens the country's very existence. The conflict began in April 2023 when the Ethiopian government launched a disarmament operation targeting militias in the Amhara region, including the powerful Fano militia. However, what started as a routine military action quickly spiralled into a major insurgency, with Amhara forces resisting what they saw as federal overreach and betrayal following their role in the Tigray War. Amhara, traditionally central to Ethiopian politics and identity, is now grappling with rising ethnic tensions. The conflict, rooted in historical grievances, is fueled by territorial disputes with Tigray and Oromia, as well as suspicions of the Oromo-led federal government under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali. By 2024, violence between Amhara and federal forces and clashes with neighbouring regions has intensified. Despite efforts to negotiate peace, the lack of a unified leadership within Fano and broader ethnic rivalries across Ethiopia have complicated resolutions.
