Chakrata Road Trip: The Most Adventurous Himalayan Drive

Narrow mountain roads, steep ghat climbs, dense pine forests, and the mighty Shivalik Himalayan ranges standing tall on every side. This is Part 9 of our epic Mumbai to Uttarakhand road trip, and honestly, this leg of the journey turned out to be the most adventurous drive of the entire trip. We checked out of our cozy Dehradun homestay, hit the road, and slowly left the city behind as the mountains started calling. The route takes you through Sahaspur, past the Ambala–Poanta Sahib–Herbertpur–Rishikesh National Highway, along NH 507, and gives you a breathtaking glimpse of the Yamuna River before the real adventure begins. Once the ghat road kicks in near Vikas Nagar, the roads get narrow, the curves get tighter, and the views get absolutely insane. The Shivalik ranges draped in mist, the pine and deodar forests lining every corner, a cute doggo who became our instant trail friend, the raw Pahadi village of Sahiya with its local market full of life — every kilometre of this drive had a story. Our destination? Not just Chakrata town, but beyond it. Way beyond. We drove more than an hour past the Chakrata Cantonment Board through increasingly narrow jungle roads — past Guasa, through dense pine forests, crossing water streams not once but twice — to reach a little-known village called Tipri, where we had booked the most isolated, soul-healing homestay you can imagine: Chaani Homestay, Tipri. Satyam Bhaiya, our host, welcomed us with so much warmth and positivity that the exhaustion of the drive just melted away. The parking spot alone had us speechless — surrounded on all sides by the Shivalik Himalayan ranges with not a single city noise in earshot. The room tour will make you want to pack your bags right now. And all of this was done in our trusty Maruti Suzuki Brezza Facelift — 1.5 NA Petrol, 6-Speed Automatic Torque Converter — which handled every steep climb, every narrow patch, and every water crossing like an absolute champion. ✨ About Chakrata — Uttarakhand's Best-Kept Secret Chakrata is a small cantonment town sitting at an elevation of approximately 2,118 metres (6,949 feet) above sea level in the Dehradun district of Uttarakhand, nestled deep in the Jaunsar-Bawar region. Unlike the overcrowded tourist circuits of Mussoorie or Nainital, Chakrata has managed to hold on to its raw, untouched beauty — and that's exactly what makes it so special. The region is famous for its dense forests of Deodar cedar and Himalayan pine, ancient tribal culture of the Jaunsar community, and some of Uttarakhand's most dramatic landscapes. Tiger Falls, one of India's highest direct waterfalls, is just a short drive from Chakrata town and is a must-visit.
